Summer Learning & Reading

Penn Yan Public Library’s 2020 summer learning program for youth ages newborn to 18-years-old runs from July 1 to August 21. A full slate of events will be offered online every weekday at 10am, ranging from library traditions like storytime and crafts to “behind-the-scenes” tours of local landmarks and a didgeridoo adventure. Families will also be able to request weekly “family fun packs” that include supplies for activities like making s’mores, having a movie night, or performing random acts of kindness. A complete schedule of online events can be found on the library’s Facebook events page.

Youth can choose how they want to participate in the reading component of the program, either by completing monthly Bingo cards, logging their reading online, or both.

Each youth who completes a Bingo card will earn a free book! The Bingo cards have been designed to help youth build their resilience while having fun and incorporating reading and writing skills in bite-size increments. Youth can also earn a free book by logging their reading time online; see below for details.

Download and print Bingo cards for August 2020 below. No printer? Just ask and the library will provide you with free printed card(s). Contact the library by calling 315-536-6114 during normal business hours, emailing info@pypl.org, or messaging through Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Instead of paper reading logs, we are asking participants to use the ReadSquared website or app to track their reading time this summer. Click on the image below to be taken to our ReadSquared website, or download the app from your device’s app store (Android or iOS), then create an account to get started.

Using ReadSquared, participants can earn points for reading, and also for completing “missions” and writing book reviews. Every participant who earns 1000 points will be awarded a free, brand-new book.

Every Friday at 8:15am, listen to WFLR to hear a shoutout to the youth who have been reading the most!
