Wireless Internet Access Setup Directions

Wireless Card Settings:
Use the software that came with your wireless card or computer to configure the settings and to verify a connection to the library's wireless network.

Choose which operating system you are using:

Windows 98

Network Settings:

  1. From Control Panel, select Network.

  2. Locate the TCP/IP protocol and get into its Properties. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter.

  3. For IP Address, select "Obtain an IP address automatically."

  4. For DNS, select "Disable DNS."

  5. For WINS, select "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution."

Windows 2000 & XP
Network Settings:

  1. From Control Panel, select "Network and Dial-up Connections" or "Network and Internet Connections > Internet Connections."

  2. Right-click on "Wireless Network Connection" or "Local Area Connection" and click Properties.

  3. Locate the Internet TCP/IP protocol and get into its Properties. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter.

  4. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically."

  5. For XP, right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and select "View Available Wireless Networks." Select the name of the wireless network available at the library and click "Connect."

Windows NT
Network Settings:

  1. From Control Panel, select Network.

  2. Locate the TCP/IP protocol and get into its Properties. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter.

  3. Select "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server" and click OK.

Connecting with Windows Vista:

Left click on the connection icon in the task bar

Click on "Connect to a Network"

Select PYPL from the available wireless networks from the listing. Make sure the selection box at the top shows "Wireless" instead of "All" so that you are assured of trying to connect to the right network.

Select the "Connect Anyway" option in the dialog box that opens. This menu is warning you that PYPL is unsecure and that your data may potentially be accessible by other people. Even though this is true, most public networks have security enabled that prevents one user from accessing ones files.

When you have successfully connected to the network you chose you will be asked if you want to save this location so that Vista automatically connects to this network again if you come back. Select the "Save this Network" and "Start this connection automatically" if these are your preferences.

Finally you need to wait till the connection icon on the task bar goes from a state of "connected to the wireless network" to a state of "connected and also has access to the internet". You will know that this has occurred when the connection icon changes from two overlapping computers to two overlapping computers with a globe in the lower right corner.

To Release and Renew your IP address:

In ‘RUN’ type CMD, this will bring you to the command prompt, at the prompt type ‘ipconfig/release’ after returning to the prompt type ‘ipconfig/renew’. These two commands will release your IP address and then renew your IP address from the Access Point, do this only if all else fails.

Please note that depending on your version of software, there may be variations in the procedures. From Control Panel, select Internet Options > Connections tab. If you also have a dial-up connection, it should not be set to "Always dial my default connection." LAN Settings should be "Automatically detect settings" and leave the Proxy server settings blank.
